Exploring the experiences of health care providers faced with provider-patient language discordance in an Ontario Family Health Team.

About

Primary care quality is significantly reliant on trust-based longitudinal relationships between patients and health providers. The delivery of language concordant care in primary care settings might be important to providing comprehensive care. This is especially relevant for minority language populations since the combined effects of difficulties accessing primary care as well as language barriers when communicating with their primary care physician may contribute to inequitable access to care. In this study, we examine the lived experiences of an interdisciplinary team of primary care providers in an Ontario Family Health Team setting to gain insight into how patient-provider language discordance impacts their ability to provide comprehensive care.
