About

Language and cultural discordance are when a patient and their care provider do not speak the same language or come from the same culture. Both have been identified as barriers to equitable and high-quality care. Our team is examining experiences of language and cultural discordant care in various care settings and from the different perspective of those involved in the care interactions. We have several projects underway looking at issues such as: experiences of caregivers from minority groups at the end-of-life, the differences between linguistic and culturally discordant palliative care; the experiences of care workers providing language discordant care in a family health team setting; and the health outcomes and health system impacts of language discordant care on patients with cancer, kidney disease, or living in nursing or retirement homes.
