COMPLETE:
Exploring primary care physicians’ experiences of language and cultural discordant care for linguistic minority patients at the end-of-life across Ontario.
About
Patient-provider language discordance can have a negative impact on access to health services and quality of care, especially for patients from ethnocultural and linguistic minority groups. In this study, we explored the experiences of family physicians providing language discordant palliative or end-of-life care to older adults across Ontario to understand the impacts of linguistic and cultural discordance in care. We gained insight in 4 key areas: (1) Communication challenges, related to interpretation and health literacy; (2) Care challenges, related to developing care plans and accessing care long-term 3) Cultural navigation, especially during difficult conversations and understanding patient preferences 4) Coping methods using physician resources and skills.
